Barrels of Fun!

The creativity has been flowing here at BrynWood Concepts.  We were recently commissioned to build two adirondak style chairs out of reclaimed wine barrels.

The color of the oak staves, the length of wood the barrel is made of, depends upon the type of spirit that was contained in the barrel.  If the barrel was used to hold red wine, as our barrel was, the color of the staves is a rich chestnut color with burgundy undertones.

The life of a red wine barrel is typically five years.  After five years, the oak has little to no beneficial flavor components left to impart to the wine.  The barrel then takes on its second life, either as a neutral container, a flower planter or in our case beautiful chairs!

Here is a video of us hard at work carefully sanding and smoothing each of the staves. This project has been an interesting process, and the customer will end up with an amazing finished product.  I'll be sure to post again soon to show our progress!
